Episode 342: Not striving to be humble

The Art of Entrepreneurship ep. 342

This episode of The Art of Entrepreneurship is for founders who downplay their wins and talk themselves out of asking for what they’re worth.

I own a shirt with a Kamala Harris quote on it that says “I’m not striving to be humble,” and I love it an unreasonable amount. Nobody rewards you for keeping quiet about your wins, and nobody is quietly tracking your restraint. I want to leave a legacy, and I want people to know my impact (two sentences that get called obnoxious when a woman says them out loud).

So I’m sharing the slightly embarrassing story of the one affirmation my business coach got out of me, plus the corny dance that goes with it. The dance is ridiculous on purpose, but the lesson behind it is serious: the way you talk to yourself in private shapes what you’re able to ask for in public. It’s the idea underneath they saying that you don’t get what you don’t ask for.

Then, I walk through four practical ways to become your own biggest fan without being insufferable: keeping a wins file, saying your wins out loud, actually taking the compliment and having a ridiculous ritual that’s all yours.

Tune in if you’re ready to stop being the last person in the room to notice what you’re good at.
